Hairline Stainless Steel Sheet: Grain Direction and Color Options

Hairline (HL) is the finer brushed finish — the one that looks almost smooth at a distance and reads as premium up close. When you spec it, two decisions actually matter: which way the lines run, and whether to leave it silver or put PVD color on top. Get either wrong and the wall looks off. This is how fabricators decide both.

Hairline vs. No.4: Why Specify It at All?

No.4 brushed has visible brush lines. Hairline uses a finer grit belt, so the lines are denser and read as almost continuous — smoother to the eye, slightly brighter. You don't specify hairline for a kitchen wall; No.4 is cheaper and works. You specify hairline when the wall is in a lobby, elevator or reception area where people will stand close to it.

The difference is subtle, but it's the difference between "this looks like a normal stainless wall" and "this looks like a nicer stainless wall." Hotels and offices spec hairline; commercial kitchens don't.

Grain Direction: The Decision People Get Wrong

The brush lines run in one direction across every sheet. Once panels go up, that direction changes how the wall reads — and it's the thing most often screwed up on site.

Vertical grain. It stretches the wall upward. In an elevator cab, vertical lines make the ceiling feel higher. On a column, it reads as one continuous element. This is the default for elevators, doors, columns and reception faces.

Horizontal grain. It widens the space. On a long corridor, horizontal lines reinforce the length. On a backsplash or wainscot, it follows the floor line. This is what you want on corridor walls and low paneling.

The hard rule: every panel on one wall must run the same direction. When a fabricator cuts one panel wrong and installs it horizontal next to vertical panels, the wall looks broken — light reflects differently at the joint. You can't fix this after installation; the panel has to come out.

What actually goes where

Elevator walls and doors: vertical, always. It's industry standard — switch to horizontal and the elevator looks like it was installed wrong.

Columns: vertical. A column with horizontal grain looks chopped up.

Corridors: horizontal. The corridor reads as longer and calmer.

Backsplashes and wainscoting: horizontal, because it follows the countertop and floor line.

Reception desk: vertical on the front face, horizontal on the top. Matches the form.

If you're unsure on a wall, go vertical. It's the safer call and rarely looks wrong.

Color: Silver or PVD?

Natural silver hairline is the default. PVD adds a vacuum-deposited color layer over the brushed texture — gold, black, bronze, rose gold, champagne and others. The grain stays visible and tactile; the color doesn't peel or chip like paint.

What each color actually does

Silver is the neutral. It goes everywhere. No one will comment on it because it just looks like stainless.

Champagne gold is the safest "premium" color. Soft, pale, warm — it adds warmth without shouting. This is what most hotel lobbies end up with.

Titanium gold is bolder. It looks luxury in a spotlight but can read as brassy under cool white office lighting. Test it under your actual lights.

Rose gold is trendier. It works in retail and hospitality, but it's a specific look — don't use it on a corporate office wall.

Black titanium is dramatic. It looks great in a bar or reception desk under spotlights. Under diffuse ceiling light, it goes flat and looks cheap. This is the color most likely to disappoint on a project.

Bronze and antique copper are warm vintage tones. Restaurants and classic interiors use them. They age well visually.

How color changes the brushed grain

Dark colors make the grain more visible — the light catches the lines harder against a dark base. Light colors soften the grain, almost to a matte look. Warm colors add depth to the texture; it reads as tinted metal, not a colored surface.

This is why you need a sample. A black hairline panel in the showroom under spotlights looks like a different material than the same panel under your office's diffuse LED panels.

Direction and Color Together

Most projects are simpler than you'd think:

Elevator: vertical grain, silver or champagne. The default that never goes wrong.

Hotel lobby feature wall: vertical grain, champagne or bronze. Warm and tall.

Bar / reception: vertical or horizontal, black titanium or bronze. Under spotlight, this works.

Corridor: horizontal grain, silver. Calm and long.

Retail display wall: vertical grain, rose gold or gold. The look that sells.

The combination that fails most often is black hairline in a dim room. It reads as flat grey plastic, not premium metal. If you want black, make sure you have good lighting on the wall.

The Mistakes We See

Mixing directions on one wall. The most common site error. A panel cut the wrong way stands out immediately. Plan the panel layout before the shop cuts anything.

Black PVD in a poorly lit space. Black hairline needs directed light. Under diffuse lighting it goes flat. If the room doesn't have spotlights on the wall, choose silver or champagne instead.

Ordering color from a screen. PVD tones look different on a monitor than on real metal under your project's lights. Always get physical samples. We send them for free — use them.

Cheap hairline with uneven grain. Budget HL sheet has inconsistent line density. On a sample it looks fine. On a full wall under angled light, patches of brighter and duller show up. Inspect before installation.

Specifying hairline where No.4 would do. Hairline costs more than No.4. If the wall is in a kitchen or behind equipment, No.4 is the right call. Save hairline for the spaces people see close up.

Q: How do I clean PVD colored hairline?

Wipe with a soft cloth and pH-neutral stainless cleaner, brushing along the grain. No steel wool, no abrasive pads, no chloride-based cleaners — they'll dull the PVD coating.

Q: Can I mix vertical and horizontal panels on one wall?

No. The reflection changes at every joint and the wall looks patchy. Plan the layout so every panel runs the same direction.
