Quick Answer: Mirror stainless steel sheet (also called No. 8 or 8K finish) is a cold-rolled stainless sheet polished to a near-mirror reflectivity. Available in 201, 304 and 316L grades, 0.3–3.0 mm thickness and standard 4×8 ft sizes, it is specified for elevator interiors, feature walls, ceiling panels, retail displays and luxury furniture where high reflectivity and a clean, modern look are required.

What Is Mirror Stainless Steel Sheet?

Mirror stainless steel sheet is produced by mechanically polishing a cold-rolled stainless surface through multiple grinding and buffing stages. The process reduces surface roughness to near-zero, producing a surface that reflects images clearly — similar to a household mirror but on a rigid stainless substrate.

In the industry it is called by several names: No. 8 finish, 8K mirror, super mirror, or polished stainless. The "8K" refers to the eighth stage of polishing in the traditional multi-step process. Lower grades like 4K or 6K produce a softer, satin reflection; 8K is the standard high-reflectivity finish.

The base material remains stainless steel — it does not rust, does not require painting, and can be PVD-coated in gold, black, bronze, blue or other colors if a colored mirror is needed. The product in this guide is standard silver mirror.

Most affordable; not for humid or outdoor use

304

18/8 chromium-nickel

Standard interior: walls, elevators, furniture

Default choice for 90% of decorative projects

316L

18/10 + molybdenum

Coastal, humid, bathroom, outdoor, food areas

Premium corrosion resistance

When to step up to 316L

Coastal locations (salt air)

Bathroom, shower, pool areas

Outdoor facade or canopy panels

Food processing or kitchen surfaces

Chemical-exposed environments

For typical hotel lobbies, elevator interiors and interior feature walls in inland cities, 304 is the correct and cost-effective choice.

Weight Calculation

Stainless steel density: 7.93 g/cm³.

Example: A 304 mirror sheet, 1219 × 2438 mm, 0.8 mm thick.

Weight = 1.219 m × 2.438 m × 0.0008 m × 7930 kg/m³ = ≈ 18.8 kg per sheet

Rule of thumb: weight (kg) ≈ length(m) × width(m) × thickness(mm) × 7.93.

How Mirror Finish Is Made

The polishing process follows these stages:

Coarse grinding — remove the 2B mill finish scratches with abrasive belts

Fine grinding — progressively finer grits to reduce roughness

Buffing — felt or cotton wheels with polishing compound bring the surface to reflective quality

Quality check — inspect under angled light for orange peel, waviness or visible scratches

Higher-grade mirror (super mirror) adds additional buffing stages for near-perfect reflection. The more polishing passes, the flatter and more accurate the reflection — but the higher the cost.

Applications

Elevator Interiors

Mirror stainless steel is the default finish for elevator cabs. The reflective walls make small elevators feel larger, bounce lighting around the cabin, and create a premium feel. Most elevator interiors use 0.5–0.6 mm mirror 304.

Feature Walls and Cladding

Mirror panels on a lobby wall, behind a reception desk or wrapping a structural column create dramatic reflection. Used in moderation — as an accent wall rather than covering every surface — mirror cladding reads as luxury.

Ceilings and Soffits

Mirror ceiling panels double the perceived ceiling height and reflect lighting fixtures. Common in lobbies, corridors and retail spaces where a low ceiling needs to feel taller.

Retail and Showroom Displays

Mirror walls in boutiques, jewelry stores and watch shops multiply the product display area and bounce spotlights onto merchandise. The reflective surface makes small retail spaces feel expansive.

Furniture and Joinery

Mirror stainless on cabinet doors, wardrobe faces, table bases and reception desks adds a high-gloss, modern edge. Pair with dark stone, wood or leather for balance.

Modern Living Interiors

Mirror wall panels in residential settings — a feature wall behind a sofa, a TV backdrop, or a room divider — create a spacious, contemporary feel. Ferosteel's own project gallery shows mirror panels used as a full-height room divider in a modern living space.

Common Mistakes

Using mirror on a large touch wall. Fingerprints and smudges show immediately. Reserve mirror for low-touch zones.

Ignoring reflection distortion. Thin panels can warp under installation, producing wavy reflections. Specify 0.8 mm or thicker for large wall panels.

Pairing with recessed downlights. Multiple bright light reflections on a mirror wall look messy. Use indirect or cove lighting instead.

Ordering 201 for a humid project. 201 spots and rusts in bathrooms or coastal environments. Use 304 minimum, 316L for wet areas.

Forgetting edge finish. Cut edges show raw stainless. Specify edge banding, polishing or folding to hide edges.

Poor installation flatness. Mirror panels must be mounted on a perfectly flat substrate. Any unevenness shows as distorted reflection.

Cut-to-size: add 3–5 days

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is 8K mirror stainless steel?

8K (or No. 8) is the highest standard mirror finish on stainless sheet. It is produced through multi-stage mechanical polishing to achieve near-mirror reflectivity. Lower grades like 4K or 6K produce a softer, satin reflection.

Q: Can mirror stainless steel be used outdoors?

Yes, in 316L grade. 304 is suitable for covered outdoor areas but 316L is recommended for exposed facades, coastal locations and salt-air environments. Standard 201 is not for outdoor use.

Q: How thick should mirror panels be for a wall?

For wall cladding, use 0.8–1.2 mm. Thinner 0.5–0.6 mm panels flex and produce wavy reflections when mounted on a wall. Use thicker panels on flat, rigid backing.

Q: Is mirror stainless steel hard to maintain?

It shows fingerprints and water spots more than brushed finish. Wipe with a microfiber cloth and mild soapy water. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool and ammonia-based products.

Q: Can mirror stainless be colored?

Yes. Ferosteel offers PVD-colored mirror in gold, rose gold, black, bronze, blue and other tones. The mirror reflectivity is preserved under the PVD coating.

Q: What is the difference between mirror stainless and regular mirror glass?

Mirror stainless is rigid, unbreakable, scratch-resistant and can be bent, folded or welded. Mirror glass is cheaper but fragile and cannot be curved or fabricated on site.
