A water ripple stainless steel sheet is a decorative stainless steel panel pressed with a three-dimensional wave pattern using custom hydraulic dies. Three standard geometries are available — small, medium and large — with wave pitches from 15 mm to 100 mm and wave depths from 0.8 mm to 5.0 mm. Sheets are typically made in 304, 316L or 201 stainless steel, 0.4–1.5 mm thick, and can be PVD colored in black titanium, rose gold and other tones. Because the rippled surface refracts light, the material is a favorite for elevator cabins, hotel lobbies and feature walls.
"Water ripple" describes a stamped 3D wave texture pressed into the surface of stainless steel with a custom die. Unlike flat decorative sheets, the rippled profile catches light at different angles, creating a flowing, liquid-like visual effect that changes as you move past it. The pattern is defined by two dimensions: wave pitch (the distance between wave peaks) and wave depth (how deep the profile stands). Different combinations of pitch and depth produce very different looks, from subtle light shimmer to bold sculptural relief.
Wave anatomy of a water ripple stainless steel sheet: pitch is the distance between peaks, depth is how deep the profile stands. Three standard geometries — small, medium and large — are available from Ferosteel.
From left to right: small ripple (subtle shimmer), medium ripple (flowing water) and large ripple (bold waves).
| Pattern | Wave pitch | Wave depth | Visual effect | Recommended thickness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small Ripple | 15–25 mm | 0.8–1.5 mm | Subtle shimmer; textile-like | 0.5–0.8 mm | Furniture, cabinetry, small wall panels |
| Medium Ripple | 30–50 mm | 1.5–3.0 mm | Flowing water; most versatile | 0.6–1.0 mm | Ceilings, wall cladding, elevator interiors |
| Large Ripple | 60–100 mm | 3.0–5.0 mm | Bold dramatic waves | 0.8–1.2 mm | Large ceilings, feature walls, facades |
If your project needs a specific wave feel, send the wave reference or a sample request to the factory — Ferosteel produces all three standard geometries plus custom dies for project-specific profiles, and can confirm the exact pitch and depth before production. For manufacturing and installation details, see our Water Ripple Stainless Steel Sheets — Tech Guide.
Ripple depth across the decorative stainless steel market typically ranges 0.5–6 mm, and very large-format patterns — for example an 80–180 mm single pattern with a shallow 0.5–1.5 mm depth — are available on request. As a rule, the larger the pattern, the shallower the depth; the exact pitch and depth are confirmed against a physical sample before production.
Because stamping adds stiffness to the sheet, ripple panels keep their shape well and can be used at thinner gauges than flat sheets for the same application.

A hotel elevator cabin clad in champagne gold PVD water ripple panels — a typical hospitality application.
For each application, panel size, thickness and seam planning differ — send the wall dimensions and lighting intent to the factory so it can propose an efficient layout. Larger panels reduce seams but depend on factory capacity.
Common PVD colors over water ripple: black titanium, rose gold, champagne gold, antique bronze and blue.
The ripple profile can be layered with other Ferosteel finishes for richer effects:
